Small Mammals

Rabbits, ferrets, chinchillas, guinea pigs, degus, and rats are commonly presented at this practice, often as referrals from other vets.

These animals require a high level of care, often necessitating hospitalisation.

We also treat other less common mammals such as the common tenrec (see the gallery), pygmy hedgehogs, skunks, and non-human primates.

Sevoflurane anaesthesia and specialised anaesthetic equipment for small mammals help to ensure the highest standard of care for these animals.

The physiology and anatomy of the many species seen is diverse and requires detailed knowledge in order to diagnose and treat diseases correctly.

Many of these animals have specific needs with regard to medication doses, fluid requirements, analgesia, and surgical considerations.

This is often the reason for referral.

At Trinity Veterinary Centre, ALL species are treated with care, kindness, and respect. Their individual needs are assessed and provided for, ensuring the greatest chance for recovery from illness and disease. We keep up with the most modern treatment protocols and can offer favourable results for previously difficult-to-treat conditions such as jaw abscessation in rabbits.

The Royal College CertZooMed qualification, which Mark holds, means he is highly qualified in dealing with even the smallest or most diverse species presented.

Richard’s zoo work also gives TVC extra experience with the more rarely presented mammals. Richard is also enrolled in his Certificate in Zoological Medicine and is very capable of dealing with exotic small mammals. Allie, too, has extensive experience in dealing with rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small mammals.
